How To Use An Apple Slicer
If you’re anything like me, you’ll find getting your young kids to eat more fruit a bit of a challenge. My daughter will do anything to get out of eating fresh fruit!
It’s why I wrote a while back on different ‘stealth’ tactics you can use to get more fruit into kids.
However, from an adult point of view, the real issue is preparation. We’re so used to living in a world where, when we’re hungry, we just stick something in the microwave, or call our favorite takeaway.
Anything that can actually make preparing fresh foods less of a chore is a winner in my eyes.
I’ve recently been introduced to the apple slicer. Yes I know, cutting apples isn’t all that difficult. But if you’re preparing several apples in one go, trust me, it’s a boring task.
Instead of using a knife to try and cut the apple into even slices or quarters, and then having to remove the core, an apple slicer will literally slice and core your apple in one fell swoop!
The brilliant ‘side effect’ of having one of these clever gadgets is that my daughter has started eating more apples!
The shape of an apple slicer means that children are less likely to hurt themselves than with a knife (although I still recommend adult supervision).
My daughter decided to ‘have a go with that strange gadget’ one day. Her face was a picture as she sliced and cored the apples expertly in seconds. Now she’s started eating apples, just so she can have ‘another go on that gadget!’
The other great thing is I’ve discovered a different, ingenious use. I can turn a whole potato (or sweet potato) into instant wedges that are identical in size (no more burnt small wedges and half cooked large wedges!)
Here’s My Step-By-Step Guide On How To Use An Apple Slicer:
1) Check the firmness of your apple. If very firm, cut in half horizontally through the core
Apple slicers are sharp, but if your apple is very firm, you may find it difficult to slice through the apple in one movement.
Cutting it in half makes life easier for you. Make sure, however, that you cut the apple horizontally though the core. If you cut it vertically, the coring part of the apple slicer will not be able to core your apple properly.
2) Place your apple on a flat surface
You can use a kitchen countertop, but you may find juices spill out. I prefer to use a wooden cutting board with a juice canal to prevent spillage.
If you have cut your apple in half horizontally due to it being firm, place it on the cutting board / counter top cut-side down.
3) Place the apple slicer on top and ensure the diameter is larger than the apple
A good apple slicer will have a large diameter so you can cut even the biggest of apples.
However, if you do have an unusually large apple, you may need to trim it to size.
4) Ensure the middle coring tool is directly above the central core of the apple
The circular coring tool will cut through the middle of your apple and remove the core.
5) Grip both handles and firmly press down to cut through apple
Keep up the pressure until you have cut right through to the bottom of the apple. Now, take off the apple slicer, throw away the core, and enjoy your perfectly sliced apple!
