How To Use A Watermelon Slicer
Most of you will be aware that I’m trying my best to get my 11 year old daughter to eat better. She used to be one of those dream kids who ate whatever was put in front of her.
These last few years, however, she has turned into the pickiest of eater, and eats mainly plain chicken, spaghetti bologna and chips – hardly the healthiest of diets!
In a bid to get her to eat more fresh fruit and veg, I’ve learnt how to make foods more fun and appetizing for children.
I write a few months back on 6 Ways To Get Your Children To Eat Fruit & Veg and 6 More Ways To Get Your Children To Eat Fruit & Veg, which have really helped me get more fresh produce inside her.
I’m always on the lookout for more inventive ways, and recently I became the owner of a watermelon slicer.
This tool has single handedly made my daughter love melon! Why?
The trick with getting picky eaters interested in foods is to get them involved in the preparation. It’s amazing what you can get a child to eat when they were involved in cutting, slicing etc.
However, would you trust a child with a sharp knife and a thick skinned watermelon? No!
But give them a watermelon slicer, and they can cut, slice and serve themselves, without you needing to fret about injuries.
Of course, make sure you choose a watermelon slicer with rounded blade edges, as otherwise it won’t be child-safe!
Also, a watermelon slicer is not just for kids. I find using one much easier and faster than using a knife.
And I love how the tool not only cuts slices and cores, I can use it to serve slices too – you know how much of a sucker I am for multi-tasking!
Here’s How To Use One Of These Ingenious Devices Effectively.
How to use a watermelon slicer
- If you are using a whole watermelon, slice the watermelon in half using a sharp Chef’s knife.
- Hold the watermelon slicer with your dominant hand, with the curve of the blade facing downwards
This is the correct ‘carving’ side. You will flip the tool to have the curve facing upwards when you serve slices of watermelon.
- Rest your support hand at the bottom of the watermelon
This is very important. I’ve made the mistake of keeping my support hand on the side of the watermelon.
What happens then is, as you try to slice, the melon slides off the countertop or cutting board.
Instead, place your support hand at the bottom of the watermelon, directly behind your moving hand (your dominant hand holding the watermelon slicer).
- Insert the slicer into the flesh, getting as close as you can to the rind at the top of the watermelon to reduce waste
Look for a watermelon slicer with a thick cutting wire that will help you get close to the rind, but will also easily cut through the tougher flesh at the rind.
- Start cutting down vertically through the middle of the watermelon, from top to bottom, where your support hand is resting,
Follow the shape of the watermelon when cutting down, pressing the slicer all the way to the bottom. It will be at its deepest at the center, and its shallowest close to the rind, as you pull the watermelon slicer out.
- Cut more slices vertically, using the cut from the previous slice as a guide
This wastes a lot less flesh.
- If the flesh is tough, and the slicer gets stuck, move the slicer up and down in SHORT movements as you slice to dislodge the flesh from the rind
If you use long strokes, you’ll get strange jagged edges on your slice, and waste a lot of flesh.
Using a short up and down movement will also create jagged edges, but these look pretty!
- Flip the watermelon slicer over to pick up and serve each cut slice
Your watermelon slicer not only slices and cores, it’s the perfectly shaped serving tool as well.
Flip it over so the curve now faces upwards. Press into the watermelon flesh, exactly into the lines you have already cut, squeeze the blades gently to catch a slice, and pull up and away from the rest of the watermelon.
So simple, even my 11 year old can do it!
