How To Use A Kitchen Spatula / Scraper
Most of us have various kitchen scrapers, bowl scrapers and spatulas in our kitchen. But many don’t know how versatile these tools are.
Seriously, not a day goes by that I’m not using one of my kitchen spatulas. They really are my go-to utensils. Once you’ve learnt all the great ways to use them, you’ll wonder why you’ve allowed them to gather dust in your drawer for so long!
1) Use a ‘spoonula’ spatula for scrambled eggs
If you’re like me, then most of the pans you have in your kitchen are nonstick, which means you can’t use metal utensils with them as you risk rubbing of the nonstick coating.
Thankfully, I have my Chef Remi Solid & Slotted Spatulas, made of food-safe nylon, so I can use them on my nonstick pans.
However, I’ve noticed cooking spatulas don’t really have the same flex as kitchen scraper spatulas, and when I’m cooking scrambled eggs, I really want to get all the egg off the sides of the pan and into the meal.
This is where the ‘spoonula’ spatula really comes into its own. A spoonula is half spoon, half spatula. I can scrape off all the bits of egg as the spatula has flex that cooking spatulas don’t. Plus, pan cleanup is so easy when you’ve scraped off most of the food!
A word of warning. For scrambled eggs, make sure you are using scrapers that are heat-resistant. Many spatulas aren’t as they’re only designed for mixing and scraping cold foods.
The Chef Remi 3 Piece Spatula Set is heat resistant to 500°F.
2) Use a square shaped scraper spatula for scraping batter and dough from mixing bowls
The square shaped scraper is just fantastic for scraping up the last bit of dough or batter from a bowl.
I also find it great for mixing as it allows you to scrape dough back into the center of the bowl so you ensure all the ingredients are mixed well – really important for certain cakes and pastries.
I dread to think how much dough and batter that clings to the side of a bowl I would waste if I didn’t have a square scraper in my cooking arsenal…..and my 10 year old daughter is more than happy to lick the scraper when I’m done!
3) Use a small and thin spatula for spreading icing, melted chocolate, jelly etc
A thin, flexible spatula can spread things like jelly or icing on top of cakes much more evenly than a knife.
Plus, because of the flexibility, you can even use a scraper to get the last remnants of spread out of a jar or container – waste not, want not!
I’ve also found another nifty trick with the small spatula. I’ve started to make bread, and I’ve found that sometimes the bread gets stuck in the bread tin.
Bread tins are usually nonstick, so you shouldn’t be using a knife to ease out the bread. Now, I just use my small spatula, slide it between the loaf and tin, flip the tin over, and out the loaf pops – simple!
Once you realize all the great things you can so with your kitchen scraper spatulas, you’ll wonder how you lived without them!
