How To Use A BBQ Spatula, Tongs and Fork
If you like barbecuing, chances are, you have some go-to BBQ tools. The most popular tools are the spatula, the tongs and the fork.
But, did you know, many people use them incorrectly. Apart from making their lives a lot harder, it can also mean they inadvertently ruin foods.
Here’s How To Use The Most Popular BBQ Tools:
1) Use BBQ Tongs To Turn Cylindrical Food Items, Like Sausages
Tongs are ideal for flipping foods that are not flat and are cylindrical shape. These food items have a tendency to roll around when using spatulas.
Tongs are invaluable for gripping and turning these types of foods. Opt for tongs which have 'teeth' which will allow you to grip foods better.
2) Use a BBQ Spatula To Flip Flat Foods
Tongs can break up and damage certain foods. For example, homemade burgers are more likely to fall apart as they have less 'gunk' in them to keep them clumped together.
Fish fillets can be extremely delicate and may fall apart, when turning, if you use tongs.
Use a spatula that is thin enough to slip under foods so you can easily flip them over.
Also, look for spatulas that can do more than just flip foods. For example, the spatula in our BBQ Grill Set has a meat tenderizer on one side, and a cutting knife on the other.
Now you can tenderize steaks and other meats, and cut them up too, all with one utensil.
3) Use a BBQ Fork To Pick Up Stacked Foods And Skewer Large Non-Meat Foods
Forks are fantastic for picking up stacked foods. Look for an angled fork with 2 prongs which make getting under and picking up a stack of food (such as burgers) easy.
Forks are also great for skewering foods. If you've ever tried to turn a potato, or other large vegetable, with either tongs or a spatula, you'll know how difficult it can be!
Tongs are great for gripping foods, but large, round objects can be difficult to grip. And using a spatula on these types of food makes them roll around.
A good fork where you can skewer foods like this is invaluable.
Please do not skewer meats with a fork! The fork is for skewering large, rounded, non-meat food items. Skewering meat allows the juices to escape, which results in a dried up, tough texture.
For meats, use the spatula or tongs, depending on how flat or cylindrical the items are.

Thanks for this! Thought I already knew how to use the BBQ tools until I read this article :) The most interesting thing to me is not to skewer meat with the fork, as it leads to drying out of the meat. This could be where I have been going wrong all these years. Ill let you know what happens to my steaks next time!
