How To Choose The Best Sink Strainer

It’s inevitable that, when washing food, some small particles will end up in the sink. The problem is when food particles accumulate.

This will clog up drains, which can be smelly to deal with, never mind the cost of calling out a plumber to clear.

I was getting to the stage where a blocked kitchen sink was becoming something I had to deal with 3 to 4 times a year.

Never mind the costs involved, it was also a real inconvenience not having a working sink when cooking in the kitchen.

A simple sink strainer is an inexpensive tool that can eliminate blocked sinks, but only if you get the right one for your needs.

Many people use sink strainers, but most of these people will still need to deal with blockages simply as the strainer does not stop all food particle from entering the drain.

Look For Strainer That Have a Large Diameter, at Least 4 Inches

It may seem like an obvious statement, but you’ll be amazed how many people have these tiny, 2 inch diameter sink strainers in their sinks, and expect it to protect the sinkhole from food.

Kitchen sinks are designed to deal with lots of water draining through it, so the sinkhole tends to be larger than what you will find in bathroom sinks, baths and showers. You can get away with a smaller bathroom sink strainer.

But, unless you have a very small kitchen sink, you will need a sink strainer that is at least 4 inches in diameter to ensure it completely covers the sinkhole, so it can efficiently stop food particles entering the drain.

Look For a Strainer That Is Made From Stainless Steel So It Won’t Rust, Melt or Warp

Your sink drain strainer can only do its job when it is fit for purpose. It will have to deal with lots of water flowing through it on a daily basis.

Most metal sink strainers will rust and corrode over time, allowing food particles to enter the drain.

Plastic strainers have a habit of melting and warping if they come into contact with hot water, which means they no longer sit correctly on top of the sink hole, allowing food to enter the sink hole.

Silicone sink strainers do have a high resistance to heat, so will not warp or corrode, but they have a nasty habit of absorbing odors and stains.

I’ve found the best material is stainless steel. Look for sink strainers where the bowl (that sits inside the sinkhole) is made from heavy duty stainless steel, NOT a flimsy mesh which can easily become misshapen.

Look For A Sink Strainer With A Heavy, Reinforced Rim

Sometimes even the newest of strainers will let food enter the drain accidentally as they move away from the sink hole due to rushing water from a tap.

You want a sink strainer that has a heavy, reinforced rim that will help it anchor itself into the sink hole, so no food particles can accidentally enter the drain, even with rushing water.
