Easy Homemade Dog Biscuits

Believe it or not, today is Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! Ah, where would we be without our beloved dogs?
That's the thing about having a pet. Once you've had one in your life, you're never the same again. Our dogs are not just our pets, they are an integral part of the family, and they give us that unconditional love and devotion that, if truth be told, even our children can't always manage!
Now here's a sobering fact. No animals in the wild are fat, or have health conditions associated to being overweight, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and breathing problems.
Yet, our dogs are now following us into developing these conditions. And all because they are following the nature of our diets; highly processed foods.
Many brands add preservatives so the food keeps longer. And, as a profit making exercise, many also have fillers added to 'bulk up' the food, instead of using wholesome, natural ingredients.
I'd never tell my kids this, but I love my dog almost as much as them! I try my best to make homemade meals as often as I can for my family, but if I also had to start cooking for Bella, I'd never leave the kitchen.
So, I set off to find an easy recipe where I can use leftovers in the kitchen to make delicious, homemade dog biscuits for my gorgeous dog. And, for the days when I really don't have any time to spare, I've researched different brands so I can feed her with a clear conscience.
Dog food brands are just like our 'human food' brands; there are some great ones out there, and some terrible ones where you feel like you need a PhD in chemistry to understand what's in them!
Read on......your dog will love you for it!
Easy Homemade Dog Biscuits
Your Ingredients:
1 tsp of Chicken / Beef Bouillon (stock or broth, or use granules)
2 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour (or use oats, if your dog is wheat sensitive)
1/2 cup of water (hot)
1 egg
1 tsp of salt
Leftovers from the kitchen, such as shredded cheese, bacon, eggs etc.
How to make your Easy Homemade Dog Bic suits
Get your oven on, and heat to 350°F.
In a large bowl, add the hot water and then add the bouillon and make sure it dissolves thoroughly.
Add all the remaining ingredients, mix them well.
Keep mixing until the ingredients come together to form a dough. You should be able to take it out of the bowl as a ball.
Knead the dough ball for about 2 minutes and then roll the dough out on a counter top until it is about 1/2 inch thick.
Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes out from the dough. I have a cutter that's shaped like a bone, but you can use any cookie cutter that you have. If I'm honest, my Bella really doesn't care!
Lightly grease a cookie sheets and place your dough pieces on it.
Cook in your oven for around 30 minutes.
Watch your furry friend devour your homemade snacks!
It really doesn't take much time at all to make these dog biscuits regularly for your pet, but yes I understand that, what with everything else we need to do on a daily basis, even these easy biscuits might be a stretch sometimes.
So here's my recommendation of ready-made dog foods:
I absolutely adore Stella & Chewys.
There ethos is to get as much raw food inside our pets as possible, just like they would eat if they were in the wild. They have complete dinners, mixers and treats, all made with as much raw food as possible.
Bella loves everything from Stella's, but her current favorite is Carnivore Crunch Duck Recipe. She goes CRAZY for these!
My other go-to brand is Halopets. Not only do they do meals and treats, they also do supplements and grooming products.
When Bella's been a good girl, she knows she'll be getting some Liv-a-Littles in her favorite flavor – beef!
And Halopets are so lovely, they donate a bowl of dog food to an animal shelter each time I buy from them.
Not every dog is as lucky as my Bella, so I love how Halopets are doing what they can to make sure every dog has a good life.
A life without dogs? Unthinkable!

What an fantastic recipe. I can’t wait to get home and make this for my dog! What inspired you to decide to mix all of those ingredients together? &&Out of all of the other brands which one would you personally recommend the most?

This is a really helpful article. The first time I got a dog, I experienced how expensive the dog biscuits were to buy from pet smart. I knew that there had to be a better way. So I tried this and my dogs love them! They think that they are the greatest thing ever! They remind me of a gravy train product. I would totally recommend making these.

Ive made dog treats before and have had some success, dogs dont seem to mind burnt biscuits as much as we do ;) I am wondering if there is something that could be added to freshen breath/clean teeth naturally as these seem to be the most expensive to buy.

How long will these keep? At room temp tightly sealed? I am definitely making these for my family’s dogs! They all have stockings at our family gathering and these will be perfect!

I had no idea there was such a thing as Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! Are you sure you’re not making it up? This recipe seems super easy, I am just a little bit concerned about the salt intake though. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to flavor the treats without using something so salty?

I cannot wait to try this recipe! My dog is so picky about store bought treats, and making my own for her would be so much healthier!
Darian Sanky#17
Woof, woof! I have 8 dogs and providing treats for all of them costs me a fortune. I will definitely be trying this recipe as the ingredients used are all inexpensive and I have most in the cupboard.

My dogs love them!! I made these yesterday with some left over cheese and bacon and my two girls adore them. I am on a tight budget and I find that the ‘healthier’ store bought biscuits are too expensive. I will be making my own from now on. Thank you

That’s such an easy recipe, and it’s so much healthier than the store bought dog treats. They’re full of preservatives and byproducts. I’m going to try this recipe and make a batch of peanut butter biscuits for my dogs.
