4 Clever Ways To Use a Magnetic Knife Strip

I spoke recently about some of my preventative measures I take to ensure my kitchen knives don’t dull prematurely.

One of the best measures you can take is to store chefs knives, paring knives and other knives on a magnetic strip, and not in a kitchen / utensils holder drawer, or a knife block.

When you store knives in a kitchen drawer, they can bang against each other and other utensils, which can cause dents, and you will damage your blades over time.

Many people believe a knife block is the answer. After all, each kitchen knife could have its own slot, therefore no interaction with each other or other utensils.

However, by continually drawing a blade out of its slot, you can cause serious dulling as the blade slides across the interior of the slot.

For this reason, I always advocate using a magnetic knife holder. If your knives can have no interaction with each other, or other materials or utensils, they’re not going to dull prematurely!

However, the name is a real misnomer, as these tools can do so much more than hold knives. I have several dotted around my kitchen, and in other rooms too!

Here’s A List Of How I Use My Knife Holders:

1. Storing food processor blades
   How often do you reach for your food processor, and then you can’t find the right attachment?
   
   I was always reaching into the back of cupboards trying to find different pieces.
   So, I attached a magnetic knife holder right at the back of the cupboard I use to store my food processor.
   
   Now, all the different blade attachments are held together, so I can easily spot the one that I need.
   
   

2. Storing herb and spice jars without taking up counter space or cupboard space
   

   How often do you buy a spice or herb, only to find a nearly full jar that was hiding in the back of a cupboard?
   
   And those counter racks of spices may look good, but they can take up an awful lot of space – annoying if you have a small kitchen.
   
   Now, this will only work if you use jars with metal lids, but if you do, just install a magnetic knife holder to the underside of a cupboard.
   
   Now you can store your herbs and spices so they are in plain sight, and yet do not take up any counter space whatsoever.
   
   
3. Hang up pot and skillet lids
   Pot lids are really annoying to store, right? Pans themselves tend to be stackable, but lids?
   
   They tend to fall over themselves, and it can be frustrating when you can’t find the right size lid because all your pot lids have fallen to the back of a cupboard!
   
   I’ve installed 2 magnetic knife holders, side by side, on one side of my kitchen. I now store all my most used pots lids on them – I can now visually see which size I need instantly!

    

4. Hanging small items using binder clips
   This is a really great idea. I’ve installed a magnetic knife holder on the side of a cabinet which now holds keys, as well as recipes, vouchers, shopping lists and notepads, all with binder clips.
   
   This is an idea that can go beyond the kitchen too. You can install a knife holder in your hallway to store different keys, in your child’s bedroom so they can hang up photographs, postcards and other bits and pieces……the possibilities are endless!
