Perfect Thanksgiving Cranberry Sauce
Cranberries have been part of Thanksgiving for generations, but did you know, cranberries actually predate Thanksgiving?
They’re one of only 3 fruits that are native to North America, and there is evidence to show that Native Americans used this delicious fruit not only as food, but also as dye for blankets, clothes and rugs, well before the first European settler turned up on these shores.
We recently allowed you to watch over the shoulders of our professional chef as he cooked a simple yet delicious Thanksgiving turkey.
However, when it comes to the ‘extras’ at Thanksgiving, such as cranberry sauce, many people buy premade store versions.
Which is a shame as, when you’ve gone to all that effort to cook homemade turkey, why stop at the cranberry sauce you’ll serve with it?
When you realise how easy it is to make from scratch (and once you’ve tasted the difference), you’ll never go back to store-bought sauces!
Preparation time: 15mins
Cooking time: 22mins
Total time: 37 mins
Servings: 6-8
Ingredients:
- 12 ounces bag of cranberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 cup of sugar
- Zest of 1 orange or lemon
- 2 tablespoons of water
- Sugar, to taste
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions:
- Place the cranberries into a saucepan. Now, take out 1 cup of cranberries, and set aside, using Chef Remi Measuring Cups. Our cups are very lightweight and portable, unlike heavy Pyrex or glass cups, so anyone can use them without accidents.
- Measure out 1 cup of sugar using Chef Remi Measuring Cups, and add to the saucepan.
- Zest the orange / lemon. We recommend using the Chef Remi Box Grater as the 4 different plates give you the versatility to grate, chop, slice and grind all types of food.
The razor-sharp stainless steel teeth will zest your orange or lemon fast, whilst also resisting rust, corrosion and dulling for a lifetime of use.
- Add 2 tablespoons of water to the saucepan and place onto a low heat. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally with a kitchen spoon, until the cranberries are soft and all the sugar has dissolved.
We recommend using the Chef Remi 3 Piece Kitchen Spoon Set.
As these spoons are made from food-safe nylon, they will never scratch your precious nonstick, Teflon, ceramic enamel or coated pans, unlike metal spoons.
They also won’t absorb odors, unlike wooden spoons, and they won’t deteriorate, unlike silicone spoons.
- Now, increase the heat to medium and cook for another 12 minutes until the cranberries burst. Once this happen, reduce the heat to low.
- Stir in your reserved 1 cup of cranberries using a Chef Remi Kitchen Spoon.
- Take off heat and add sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Cool your sauce to room temperature before you serve.
Happy Thanksgiving!
