Child Friendly Microwave Potato Chips
Ignoring a child that’s begging for potato chips is like trying to ignore a noisy hurricane……impossible!
Here’s a fantastic recipe for making potato chips at home, without the need for a deep fat fryer (which is also very unhealthy).
Flavor them anyway you like, with a dash of vinegar, some pepper, or just some sea salt – your kids will soon stop asking for shop bought chips!

Cooking time: Up to 7 mins
Total time: 27mins

How to make your Microwave Potato Chips:
- Peel your potatoes using a y-peeler. Then slice potatoes into thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick. You can do this with a sharp kitchen knife, but it’s much easier to create very thin slices using the mandolin plate of a box grater.
- Get your children to place all the potato slices into a bowl, add the oil and salt, and get them to toss through well.
- Coat a large plate (microwave-proof) with cooking spray and then arrange the potato slices on top in a single layer. You may need to work in more than one batch.
- Microwave for 2-3 minutes (depending on how thick/thin the potato slices, and how powerful your microwave is), until you see some of the slices starting to brown. Don’t wander off! Watch your slices like a hawk (or, even better, delegate to your children…..they’ll love keeping an eye on their potato chips!)
- Use a slotted spatula to turn over the potato chips over. You might also want to rearrange the position of different chips to prevent scorching.
- Microwave again for another 2-4 minutes until the chips crisp up and brown around the edges.
- Move the chips to a separate cool plate to crisp up further (do not leave on the plate that you used to microwave as the heat will make the chips soggy).
- Add whatever flavorings you want, such as more salt, pepper or vinegar. Get the kids involved and get them to flavor their own chips. If you want to store these chips. Seal in an airtight container to keep for up to 3 days.
